Walworth Yacht Designs
Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering

Walworth Yacht Designs is a small yacht design firm located in the US Virgin Islands. The primary focus is in multihull design, both sail and power, although monohulls are an ongoing interest as well. Engineering services for existing boats, such as stability calculations or analysis of structural issues, are also available. We have also provided structural engineering services for existing designs that have not yet been built. Further, WYD has provided structural engineering services for marine components such as trim tabs and passerelles.
David Walworth , the owner and chief designer, has the unique background of actually having built boats before turning to designing them. This is a valuable advantage, as he understands what information is required by the builders and how to design a boat to be easily built. To gain this experience, after completing the design program at the Landing School of Boatbuilding and Design, he went to work for Eric Goetz at Goetz Custom Sailboats for 5 years.

After five years of building boats David continued his design and engineering education at MIT to pursue his long term goal of designing boats. He received an SM in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering in 1996. After a three month long sailing honeymoon, he found work at Gold Coast Yachts on St. Croix, US Virgin Islands. At Gold Coast he worked as a naval architect, with particular responsibility for the hull shapes and structural design of the cruising and charter multihulls they produce.

After 3-1/2 years at Gold Coast, David launched Walworth Yacht Designs in 2000; he obtained his license as a Professional Engineer in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering two years later.
